Important Information for Trail Users:
128 Trailhead Area Closure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 17, 2026
Cuyuna Lakes, MN - [March 17, 2026] - Access to the 128 Trailhead area and a segment of the Galloping Goose Trail within the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area is currently affected by a private land access situation near June Lake.

“No Trespassing” signage has been posted on a privately leased parcel that includes a portion of Overburden Road and approximately 650 yards of the Galloping Goose Trail near the 128 Trailhead. This has resulted in a temporary closure of this corridor to public use.

This area provides access to multiple trails and public water access points for a range of recreational uses, including Huntington Mine, Alstead Mine, and June Lake.

Affected trails and recreation areas include:

  • 128 Trailhead Parking

  • Galloping Goose (approximately 650 yards at 128 Trailhead)

  • June Lake access

  • East Alstead Mine Lake access

  • Mucker Mountain

  • Backcountry Connector

  • Drawpoint

  • Auger

  • Sandhog Mountain

  • Screamer

  • Hopper Hill

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is the land manager for the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (CCSRA) and is actively working through the situation.

The Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew does not have a role in land access decisions within the CCSRA. The Crew is focused on keeping users informed and supporting safe trail operations while this is being addressed. While there may be temporary impacts to specific access locations, our 2026 trail work season will continue as planned. We are currently working with the DNR on temporary measures and signage to maintain safety and trail continuity wherever possible.

The broader trail system will remain open once conditions allow, with potential impacts to access in that area. We’ll share updates as we receive guidance from the Minnesota DNR.

Trail users are asked to respect all posted signage and closures. For updates and additional information, visit the Minnesota DNR visitor alert page here.
