The Directions
The Surly Red Dirt Fest will be at a new location this year, Ironton's own Morningside Park (for reasons only the internet gods know, its listed as "WT Park" in Google). Morningside Park includes large wooded areas with gentle slopes and off street parking.
Its perfect place to enjoy music, suds and fun. The best part is that all this takes place a few blocks south of downtown Ironton, meaning all sorts of bike trails are just moments away. |

The Rides
Use the selector below to choose your ride(s). We do allow multiple ride sign ups, but in cases of high ride numbers, riders that haven't been on a ride get first selection. If a ride isn't filled up, you can just sign up onsite. Choose your ride level and meet us at the ride start!
As Cuyuna is home to MN’s fastest drying trails the Surly Red Dirt Fest rides are planned rain or shine. Of course we’ll not ride in the rain on the Singletrack, but we've learned even a pre-event monsoon couldn’t keep a Dirt Fest ride down.
Helmets required, no exceptions!
12:00pm
Ride Level: Advanced
WHO: You think your are fast. You got the Strava times and that KOM/QOM badge that you shared on the Interwebz. Well, now its time to earn the candy the hard way, baby. A ride for those that like to push themselves and feel the burn. Dropped riders will be left for the wolves.

Ride Level: Easy
WHO: You are a little unsure of this "riding on dirt thing". Maybe you are dirt curious, maybe you have just started, whatever, take ride on the wild side. The ride will start off on the pavement but will slowly up the skill level with plenty of chance to bail if you are starting to feel a little above your pay grade.

- Paved trail warm up on your way to Cuyuna’s famous Dragline trail along the lake.
- Ride leaders will lead from the front with stops to check in on you, wipe your brow if needed.
- Pace = On paved trail 5-10 MPH with red dirt sections at 4-5 MPH average.
01:00pm

02:00pm
Ride Level: Advanced
WHO: You like your roads with a strip of grass down the middle, crushed rock on the sides and going to new places. Well, Cuyuna offers you a not-so-beaten-path that is just a mine road away. Who knows, you might glimpse the Trommald Triplets through the woods (avoid eye contact). Whether sound you hear is the song of summer or the sirens calling, its still an adventure.
Features:
- Where this goes is anybody's guess.
- The infamous Flying Finn will be gracing these tramps with his presence...hence the "blessing" reference. He'll drop your sorry carcass, but his posse will be there to patch you up and get you back on the non trail in record time. . .This is a once (or maybe three) in a lifetime opportunity.
- Pace = Moderate to leg burning, with some hike-a-bike.
Ride Level: Easy
WHO: Bust out the (biking) pant suit and lead ladies! If you've ever wanted to roll through the woods but felt like you needed a winglady to do it, this is the ride for you. We'll go as slow as you need to because we got your back, sis. Equal parts camaraderie, learning and laughs.
Features:
- Paved to beginner Dragline. Haul Road into Yawkey and around the Trout Loop and back again.
- No one gets dropped and everyone gets time to catch their breath.
- Pace = On paved trail 5-10 MPH with red dirt sections at 4-5 MPH average.
03:00pm
Ride Level: Easy/Intermediate
WHO: You wore a costume to KlunkerFunk and dammit, you’re going to ride in it. A fun filled ride with plenty of chances to show off your Sailor Moon or Ash look. The pacing and the route will be moderate because you don't need to do a lot of hard riding while wearing lederhosen.
Features:
- Paved to beginner Dragline. Haul Road into Yawkey, Tugger, Bobsled, Man Cage, Haul Road Out.
- Leaders...They dressed up for this, what more do you need to know? Ok, they’ll regroup occasionally.
- Pace = 6-8 MPH average... After all, it’s a leisurely ride!
Ride Level: Intermediate
WHO: Strava, Schmava, let’s just ride! You could race if you wanted to, but you don't. What you do want is fun ride that includes some of the most signature trails in the whole Cuyuna system. No aggro, wieght-weenie, 3% body fat riders here, just people wanting to have a good ride with friends.
Features:
- Easy Street to Sandhog, Screamer, Low Grade, Ferrous Wheel, Miners Mountain to the top, Miners Mountain down, Trammer, Roly Poly & out.
- Leaders...They'll probably wait for you at trail intersections, most likely won’t provide snacks or sandwiches, unlikely to coddle, will probably enjoy a beer with you back at the park afterwards...but wouldn't "share" one, even if it was the last on earth.
- Pace = 7-10 MPH average.
04:00pm
Ride Level: Intermediate/Advanced
WHO: You are more worried about the drippings from your road rash ruining your 5-10s than you are about the blood loss. Skills and bike handling are your jam and you love jammin'. Well this ride will not disappoint as we slather it with some Cuyuna grade jam.
Features:
- Switchback from Rally Center to Dragline.Haul Road, Tugger, Manual Drive, Skip. shenanigans in Timbershaft, Grizzly, Haul Road, Dragline, Manhigh, Switchback out.
- Leaders...they most likely don flat bill hats & brightly colored knee socks in daylight hours...they'll laugh when you bail, probably won’t stop, might throw a band aid your way as they whiz by.
- Pace = 9 -11 MPH average
Ride Level: Easy to Intermediate (must have endurance for 1.5 hr ride)
WHO: You love mountain biking but aren't too keen on the grinding up climbs. You are in luck because this is a no climb ride, that's right...no substantial hills (mole hills, ant hills, prairie dog mounds)! Everything is designed for nice ride without the gravity busting
Features:
- Paved trail to Dragline, Haul Road, Tugger, Trout, Manual Drive, Haul Road, Dragline, paved trail out.
- Leaders...Clearly amazing and thoughtful, they specially requested no hills. Genius status.
- Pace= 5 -7 MPH average

The Games (& Shenanigins)
Will there be serious competition? Nah, the word "Serious" and "Red Dirt Fest" have nothing in common, unless you're talking "Serious Red Dirt Fest FUN!" Just to keep you on your toes, there may be a new event for 2017 but we're not telling. We don't want ringers hogging all the success.
Besides bragging rights, bike event winners will be awarded amazing swag from Surly Brewing and Surly Bikes.
For all bike related games: Helmets are required!
