Outside Magazine, an internationally distributed adventure magazine recently published a story titled 26 of the Best Trips to Take Right Now. The 26 locations included Norway, Peru, So. Africa, Australia and other worldly destinations that come to mind when you think of places to make the most of your summer adventure.
South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park or the Sacred Valley in Peru certainly fit the mold of “Ultimate Adventure Destination”. There are a few lesser-known destinations among the 26 that will have you reaching for your globe. One of them in particular will not require a world atlas or even an entire United States map . . . All you will need is a map of Minnesota, specifically CUYUNA, MN.
True North Basecamp (TNB), made Outside Magazine’s list of ‘26 of the Best Trips to Take Right Now!’ True North Basecamp opened in the Autumn of 2015 and consists of 6 lakeside cabins and 33 hillside campsites with views overlooking the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (CCSRA).
Dan Jurek, the co-founder of True North Basecamp along with business partner Jeff Bajek, acquired 40 acres of land for TNB in 2013 with a plan to create the first (and currently only) privately owned business with direct access to the trails of the CCSRA. Dan and Jeff foresaw the need for TNB’s style lodging as ridership on the mountain bicycling trails was growing exponentially since the CCSRA mountain bicycling trails opened in the Spring of 2011.
Jurek added: “We’ve been so thankful for how the entire region has come together to help make our property a reality. When we set out to create this ride-in, ride-out experience, we always had the goal of being a global destination. It looks like this recent news confirms it was possible!”
Outside Magazine recognized True North Basecamp’s proximity to the CCSRA’s International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Silver Level Ride Center, as key to hosting unique adventures for their customers. Red dirt mountain bicycling trails, crystal-clear mine lakes for paddling, swimming and fishing, and winter fat bicycling are all right outside the TNB cabin doors.
To further emphasize the reach of Outside Magazine, here are some stats:
Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew volunteer president Aaron Hautala noted: “It’s wonderful to see another positive step forward in our master vision of Cuyuna’s becoming an international, year-round, family cycling destination. We could have never done it without the investments of our business community, the advocacy of our entire region and state, all the Human-powered outdoor recreation visitors to the CCSRA each year, and the hundreds of partnerships that have been created to make what some said was impossible, possible. We’re still not finished, we have a long way yet to go, but this recognition provides a good indicator that we are heading in the right direction”.
Cuyuna’s local population has enjoyed the beauty of the area for decades. The development of the CCSRA by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Parks and Trails Division with their continuous improvements and trail additions will continue to add to the economic benefits and global recognition realized by the region.
’26 of the Best Trips to Take Right Now’ . . . Yes, the Cuyuna region fits right in!
